Inception of the Clans

When Kerensky left the Inner Sphere in what would become known as "The First Exodus" he took with him 80% of the SLDF, including scientists, technicians, mechwarriors, pilots, and their families.

After almost a year of jumping aimlessly searching for a new place to call home, a movement began on two jumpships to cut the losses of the Exodites and return home. General Aleksandr Kerensky did not take this well and crippled the two jumpships leaving them there.

A few months later Kerensky became aware of a general dissilusionment amongst the Exodutes, quickly he surveyed the area within a few jumps of his current position, and found 5 habitable planets. These were the planets of Babylon, Circe, Eden, Arcadia and one other (which I'm embarrased to say that I don't know its name!). These 5 planets were dubbed "The Pentagon Worlds".

After a few years, old animosities reignited. Riots broke out, and civil unrest was rife. All of Kerensky's efforts to quell the uprising, only spurred the revolution on, more and more did violence occur.

Sick of the constant warring, Aleksandr's son, Nicholas Kerensky, and his wife Jennifer, appealed to all of those people who were sick of the fighting to leave with him for the planet of Strana Mechty in what is now known as the "Second Exodus".

Nicholas realised that to expect the new exodites to live without war was a mistake. Fighting is part of Human Nature, a big part. So Nicholas created The Clans. 20 groups that worked on a caste based system. 5 castes, the Labourer, the Scientist, the Technician, the Merchant, and the Warrior. The caste system is best explained with the following passage from The Rememberence.

As each warrior plays his role in battle,
So each caste plays its role for the Clan.
Growers of food and makers of 'Mechs,
Those who discover and those who enrich,
All look for justice to the warrior who governs.

- The Rememberence (Clan Diamond Shark),
passage 96, Verse 12, Lines 1-5

Although each Clan has its own view of the caste system. For example, the Smoke Jaguars see every caste other than the Warrior caste, as a lower caste, not worth its weight in surat droppings. While Clan Diamond Shark treats all castes as equal (they are almost democratic). In fact, the Diamond Shark's equal treatment of its "lower castes" allowed it to profit hugely, and come out of the Golden Century the richest Clan.

The people who fled to Strana Mechty with Nicholas all tested for positions within his new society. This brought major changes, as ex-SLDF warriors who could not "make the grade", as it were, were relegated to a lower caste, be it merchant, tech, scientist or labourer. However, it has been known to happen, that a 'lower castesman' becomes a warrior. However, seeing as they are freeborn, they will not get much respect and perhaps rise no higher than Star Captain if they are lucky. In fact, they will not be able to claim a bloodname unless both of their parents were of the same bloodheritage, and flushed out of Mechwarrior training.

In 2834, Nicholas Kerensky was killed during a Trial of Absorption held by Wolf to absorb Widowmaker.

In 2854 Clan Coyote invented the Omnimech. All of the Clans were quick to begin deployment of these new breed of BattleMech, the last being Clan Ghost Bear, who, because of its reluctance to adopt the major new piece of weaponry before examining it and testing its battlefield performance, lost several key cities and legacies to OmniMech equipped Clans.
